2010-08-16Chip Seal and Crack Seal Expansion
June 2010
ISSA voted in 2008 to expand its scope to include other preservation treatments including chip seals and crack treatments. Since that time, ISSA has formed two new committees to develop specification guidelines and promotion materials for these disciplines.
The chip seal committee, chaired by Neil Guiles of Vestal Asphalt, is focusing on the development of performance guidelines similar to the A-105 and A-143 guidelines used for slurry seals and micro surfacing, respectively. These guidelines are expected to be completed in 2011.
The crack treatment committee, chaired by Bryon Darling of Crafco, is also working to develop recommended perform guidelines and promotional materials for various forms of asphalt crack sealing. The anticipated completion of the recommended performance guidelines is 2011.
Since 2008, ISSA has expanded the programs at the Annual Convention to include presentations on chip seal and crack treatments. We have also included crack seal and chip seal presentations and a very popular demonstration at the Slurry Systems Workshop, which will be held January 25 through the 28th in Orlando. ISSA provided speakers for chip seal and crack sealing at the 2009 World of Asphalt. We will continue this outreach effort as opportunities arise.
Long term, ISSA is looking at possible name changes to more accurately reflect our expanded scope. We will also pursue new partnerships, develop promotional materials and create webinars.
ISSA is diligently pursuing new suppliers and contractors involved in these disciplines. We are a non-profit organization and rely on the hard work and expertise our member companies to make this expansion successful.
