During the 58th Annual Convention of the International Slurry Surfacing Association (ISSA) held February 17-21, 2020, in San Antonio, Texas, ISSA’s President’s Award for Excellence was presented to VSS International, Inc., for their work on the Pacific Coast Highway Pavement Preservation program.

ISSA President’s Award was established to recognize those contracting achievements that best exemplify the highest quality of workmanship and materials, as well as conformance to best practices as defined by the International Slurry Surfacing Association.

The 2018-2019 pavement preservation work completed by VSS International, Inc involved a 22 mile stretch of State Route 1 from Seal Beachnorth to Artesia Boulevard in Los Angeles County, California.  The project required nighttime placement of over 8 million square feet of slurry seal under intense working conditions.  The total contract took 250 working days.  Working hours were 9 pm to 6 am with all travel lanes opened by 6 am without exception.  The project required design enhancements of Type III Slurry Seal to be placed at night in a demanding coastal environment. 

 According to Sam Gallardo, Resident Engineer, CalTrans, “We find that VSS International works quickly and responsibly and have done the difficult coordination with various cities…VSS International has shown professionalism and skill on the work that they do.”
