ISSA 2023 SSWS

About the Slurry Systems Workshop

The Slurry Systems Workshop is a study course offering a challenging and informative program on slurry seal, micro surfacing, chip seals and crack treatments with live operation demonstrations and workshop-type discussions. Highly qualified Pavement Preservation Specialists will cover topics on the previously listed processes, including materials and equipment, specifications, hand mixes, calibration, quality control, and inspection. Attendees will also be able to view state of the art slurry, micro surfacing, chip seal and crack treatment equipment, independent of the paving demonstrations. With the ability to choose between a variety of sessions and tracks, there is something for everyone at the 2023 Slurry Systems Workshop.

Looking for something more interactive? Bring your work boots and be prepared to get dirty for this year’s “Hands-On Day”. We will start by diving into the details of slurry & micro equipment and then we will put you to work as a member of a micro crew for a day. You will have the opportunity to get hands-on with a micro surfacing paver as we discuss and demonstrate calibration, how to configure the paver to meet mix design requirements and the systems behind the covers that make it all work. Then we will move to a micro surfacing spreader box as we go over basics of operation and proper setup. We will put the equipment to work to produce mixes and recreate real world application scenarios. We will drop some piles of mix for hand work, demonstrate proper joint construction and go through various other situations and discuss best practices. Crowd participation is not just requested, it is required! We will have hand tools (squeegees, rakes, etc.) available and the equipment will be accessible for you to operate. Availability for this class is very limited and additional fees apply, so register today to save your spot!

AASHTO TSP•2 Certification Exam

The National Center for Pavement Preservation (NCPP) will again offer the AASHTO TSP•2 Certification Exams following the Slurry Systems Workshop for each of the following preservation treatments: chip seal, slurry systems, and crack treatment. An exam will be administered that is 50 questions for agency personnel and 80 questions for contractor personnel (with the exception of the crack treatment contractor exam which is 50 questions). The exam is closed book/closed note and a score of 70% or higher is needed to pass. The exam tends to take participants 45 to 90 minutes to complete. Individuals who pass the exam will receive a certification card which is valid for three years from the date it was issued and will be recognized by all states requiring AASHTO TSP•2 preservation certification. Their name and expiration date will also be added to a searchable database on the TSP•2 website.

For more information about the certification process, please call NCPP at 517-432-8220, or visit https://www.tsp2.org/certification-information/.
Please note, these exams are an additional charge.

ISSA Exams

ISSA also offers two exams for attendees - Micro Surfacing and Chip Seal - that will be held on Thursday, January 19 at the conclusion of the workshop. These exams are intended to be knowledge checks to measure what the attendee has gained from the workshop and provide a demonstration of the benefits of workshop attendance that attendees can share with their company management. This year both exams are also available in Spanish! These exams can assist attendees in determining if they have areas they need to review prior to taking the NCPP certification exams, which are offered for an additional fee.
