2023 Slurry Systems Workshop: Back in Action with Spring Training

Thursday, October 13, 2022

The International Slurry Surfacing Association (ISSA) is heading back to the Santa Fe Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, January 16-19 for the 2023 Slurry Systems Workshop.

The Workshop Committee, with the Director of Sales, Jimmy Kendrick, Bergkamp, Inc, as Chair, is working hard to plan a Workshop that will hit it out of the ballpark. After reviewing previous surveys and feedback, the committee is working to make some well-thought-out changes.

First up to bat: The Hands-On Day on Monday, January 16th. During this additional event, attendees will have the opportunity to get hands-on with a micro surfacing paver as we discuss and demonstrate calibration, how to configure the paver to meet mix design requirements and the systems behind the covers that make it all work. Then we will move to a micro surfacing spreader box as we go over basics of operation and proper setup. We will put the equipment to work to produce mixes and recreate real-world application scenarios. We will drop some piles of mix for hand work, demonstrate proper joint construction, and go through various other situations and discuss best practices. Registration is limited and an additional fee, so register early!

Rounding out Second: The Workshop will open on Tuesday morning with a keynote speaker from Texas Rangers Hall of Famer Jim Sundberg. Sundberg is known as one of the top defensive catchers in Major League history. He won six Gold Glove awards and was a three-time American League All-Star during his 16-year major league career with the Rangers, Milwaukee, Kansas City, and the Chicago Cubs. Attendees will also learn about pavement preservation and hear various job stories to see how ISSA treatments have worked for them. Breakout sessions will continue that focus on ISSA Treatments on Tuesday and Wednesday. Sessions include Micro Surfacing & Slurry Seal, Chip Seal, Crack Fill Treatments, Advanced Track, Inspection, and Technical.

Attendees will be in the stands as they are spectators during the equipment showcase and participate in a live demo of micro, chip, and crack seal on Wednesday afternoon. This is a great opportunity for attendees to see ISSA treatments in play.

Sliding into third: The Group Sessions have been modified. The Mix Tables, which rotate through five stations, and the Distributor & Chip Spreader Operation and Calibration session will only be offered Thursday morning. Attendees will have the option to attend both the Slurry & Micro Calibration and Record Keeping and Slurry & Micro Design Process group sessions both in the morning and afternoon of Thursday. Bringing it home: The Workshop wouldn’t be made possible without the continuous and generous support of our Sponsors. Sponsorship opportunities are still available and include one complimentary registration and the opportunity to participate in the tabletop exhibits with dedicated for attendees to visit throughout the Workshop.

Finally for the win: ISSA will be offering knowledge-based exams on Thursday afternoon for both Micro Surfacing and Chip Seal. These exams are a great way to prep for the AASHTO TSP Certification exam offer through the National Center of Pavement Preservation (NCPP) on Friday, January 20. This exam is an additional registration through NCPP. To learn more, please visit: https://www.tsp2.org/register/input.php?meeting_id=219

ISSA looks forward to filling the stands and hitting this year’s Workshop out of the park.
